All things considered, TruNature Probiotic is not a bad probiotic supplement. But it is also far from perfect. The main selling point of TruNature Probiotic is that it delivers a diverse array of probiotic bacteria which have been proven to improve digestion and overall gut microbiome health. However, this is not a cure-all, and it does not fix long-term gut health. TruNature Probiotic contains just 50mg of prebiotic fiber, which compares poorly to the industry standard of 1-2g! For long-term gut health, a combined probiotic and prebiotic supplement is the better option. But for a short-term digestion aid, TruNature probiotic is not a bad option.

To really review a probiotic like TruNature Advanced Digestive Probiotic, you need to look at the ingredients in detail.

First of all, I need to point out that this is indeed an expanded version of the supplement; TruNature Probiotic did used to only contain 3 probiotic bctria strains, whereas now each serving provides 12 different bacteria strains.

It is therefore completely right for TruNature to cal this an “advanced” probiotic; it is now significantly more potent than the first iteration.

I’ll now go over the positives and negatives of the ingredients in more detail. At the end, I’ll give you my opinion of the TurNature Probiotic formula as a whole.


Formula analysis: My take on the TruNature Probiotic ingredients

Overall, this is not a bad probiotic supplement at all. TruNature Advanced Digestive Probiotic provides a good range of effective, proven probiotic bacteria, at a sensible dosage, for a reasonable price.

The diversity of the bacteria strains TruNature Probiotic delivers is definitely a major selling pioint for this gut health supplement. Each serving contains several different strains of both Lactobacillus and Bfidobacterium strains of bacteria.

The selection of bacteria in a probiotic is important. A healthy human gut is home to hundreds of different strains of bacteria, but an optimally healthy microbiome is largely dominated by both Bifidobacerium and Lactobacillus strains, with the others making up a small minority.

It is these bacteria strains which produce the enzymes responsible for breakdown vital nutrients like protein, carbohydrates and fats.

It is these bacteria strains which do most of the work protecting the gut from infection, out-competing harmful bacteria and preventing their growth. Certain strains, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifidobacterium lactis have been found to be extemely effective for alleviating diarrhea and constipation (especially hat caused by antibiotics).

A potentially bigger selling point of TruNature Advanced Digestive Probiotic is the inclusion of prebiotic fiber in the form of Xylooligosaccharides (XOS).

Xylooligosaccharides are an extremely interesting class of prebiotics. These prebiotics are slightly different to most other pebiotics. Xylooligosaccharides are polymers of the sugar xylose; they have a 5 carbon atom structure (C5), while most prebiotic fibers are based on C6 sugars.

These prebiotiocs have been thoroughly studied in clinical trials and have been found to be highly effective at increasing the numbers of both Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus bacteria strains in the human gut.

The only problem is the dosages used; a good dose of prebiotic fiber is 2-5g daily. This probioic contain 50mg of prebiotic fiber – A TINY DOSE! This is ot going to make any difference to your digestie health at all, although it is better than nothing.

The combination of probiotic bacteria and this top quality prebiotic in TruNature Probiotic makes for a fantastic gut health supplement. But the dosage really ruins the formula; I don’t know why they skimped on this crucial piece of the puzzle!

Overall, TruNature Advanced Digestive Probiotic looks like a great gut health supplement to me. For fixing severe microbiome imbalances, I think this is a good option. Just follow up with a good prebiotic and you’ll enjoy optimal gut health for the long-term.

Generally speaking, probiotics are not suitable for daily use over the long term. Probiotics tend to introduce large quantities of exogenous bacteria to the gut; often, the contain bacteria that are not usually found in the gut in large quantities. Dumping enormous amounts of unusual bacteria strains onto your gut every single day might fix an imbalance, but it will eventually cause new imbalances!

Taking probiotics every day for prolonged periods will cause side effects including:

  • Bloaing
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation

Side effects should dissipate once you stop taking this probiotic.

As well as the TruNature Advanced Digestive Probiotic, this brand also have a deciated women’s probiotic, called TruNature Women’s Daily Probiotic. This probiotic supplement is sold as being specifically created to meet the needs of women. However, if you look at the ingredients of TruNature Women’s Probiotic, you’ll see that it is identical to TruNature Advanced Digestive Probiotic apart from the fact that the doses are much lower; half in some cases. There is no reason for these probiotics to have such wildly different dosages. A good dosage for a women’s probiotic is the same dosage you want in a man’s.

Importantly, this probiotic contains some pebiotic fiber, which will selectively feed healthy gut bacteria.

However, the dose of prebiotic you get here is pretty woeful. Fiber should be dosed in grams, not milligrams, let alone doubl digit milligrams! Taking 50mg of Xylooligosaccharides per day is not going to allow beneficial bacteria to thrive. Such a low dose will not make any difference at all to gut health.

So while this might be a good probiotic for fixing gut microbiome imbalances, it is not ideal for supportin long term gut health.
