Do probiotics help with erectile dysfunction?

Yes probiotics can help with erectile dysfunction. Probiotics aren’t a quick fix for gut health problems and sexual health dysfunction. But they can be an incredibly beneficial part of a holistic treatment plan for things like erectile dysfunction and low sperm count.

Erectile dysfunction is alarmingly common today. The problem of erectile dysfuction is, as you might imagine, much more common in older men than younger men. However, a growing number of younger men are now struggling with sexual dysfunction, particularly erectile dysfunction.

This are several different ways that your gut can interfere with your ability to get a good erection.

For starters, your gut actually produces the majority of the neurotransmitters in your body. The main neurotransmitter produced in the gut is serotonin. While the majority of the serotonin made in the gut is used there (in the Enteric Nervous System), much of it can go to the brain where it supports mood, cognitive function, and sexual arousal.

Another way your gut bacteria can contribute to or exaccerbate erectile dysfunction is by regulating energy levels. A lack of healthy gut bacteria is known to lead to B vitamin deficiencies. This in turn can cause chronic fatigue and a complte lack of energy. The end result is a loss of libido and no ability to perform sexually.

Finally, there is the relationship between your gut microbiome and testosterone. This is a complicated relationship that is not completely understood yet. However, clinical trials show quite clearly that having a robust, halthy, balanced gut microbiome leads to healthy testosterone levels, whereas a microbiome devoid of healthy bacteria can contribute to low testosterone.


Do probiotics increase sperm?

Probiotics may increase sperm count. In one study, probiotic supplementation increased serum testosterone, LH and FSH levels in both NW and DIO groups resulting in significantly higher velocity and percentages of progressively motile sperm and significantly lower percentages of immotile sperm. In other words, probiotics made sperm more mobile and numerous.

However, this does not mean that taking probiotics will help every single man with low sperm count. There are myriad reasons why a man may have low sperm mobility or low sperm count, and probiotics will not help in every instance.


Should you take probiotics to treat erectile dysfunction?

Each case of erectile dysfuction is different. Erectile dysfunction has many different causes, not all of which an be successfully treated or even helped with probiotics.

However, probiotics have been found to be effective for ameliorating cases of erectile dysfunction.

The way probiotics help with erectile dysfunction and sexualperformance more generally is complicated, and likely involves testosterone, energy regulation, and neurotransmitter production.
