As you can see, this is a really simple gut health supplement. This prebiotic contains just one ingredient. However, there is a lot to this ingredient. We’ll now explain what Orafti Synergy1 is, how it helps improve gut health, and what separates it from simple prebiotic fiber from Chicory root. Orafti Synergy1 – 2g

Orafti Synergy1 is a branded, highly potent Chicory root extract. However, it is not a simple Chicory root extract; it has been purposefully designed to be far more effective than standard Chicory root fiber at supporting the gut micrbiome.

Orafti Synergy1 is essentially a package of fructooligosaccharide-enriched Inulin. Both Inulin and Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are prebiotic fibers. They are both found naturally in Chicory root, which is 20% inulin and just under 10% FOS.

The combination of these prebiotic fibers is significant. Inulin is a long-chain molecule, while FOS is a short-chain plant fiber. This gives Inulin-FOS, as a single compound, some very important properties. Above all else, it makes Inulin-FOS extremely robust and resilient; it passes through the gastrointestinal tract almost completely unscathed. Once it arrives in the colon, it acts as ready sustenance for the most beneficial strains of bacteria already in the gut.

More specifically, Inulin-FOS selectively feeds Bifidobacterium strains in the gut. This is extremely important – a healthy gut microbiome should be largely made up of Bifidobacterium strains; it is these bacteria which ensure healthy digestion, support immune system function, and help with nutrient absorption. These strains are also largely responsible for keeping levels of harmful bacteria in the gut very low.

What we like about the Performance Lab Prebiotic formula

There is a lot that we like about Performance Lab Prebiotic. In our opinion, this is an extremely high quality prebiotic supplement.

The manufacturer couldn’t have chosen a better ingredient for rebalancing the gut microbiome.

Several independent clinical trials have shown that Inulin-FOS can increase the percentage of Bifidobacterium strains in your gut from 20% (in an unhealthy gut) to 70% or more. Some studies found that much of this growth comes at the expense of gram-negative Bacteroides. Bacteroides are naturally occurring in the gut, but a preponderance of them is associated with infections and digestive issues.

So Inulin-FOS is clearly effective for fixing an imbalanced gut microbiota.

But the evidence backing up Inulin-FOS goes much deeper than this. Studies have shown that Inulin-FOS directly leads to specific enhancements in multiple different aspects of health and performance.

Benefits of prebiotics

One study, published in the Journal of Biosciences in 2002 (December – Applications of Inulin and Oligofructose in Health and Nutrition – Vol. 27, No. 7), states that Inulin and FOS can:

  • Stimulate the immune system
  • Decrease risk of osteoporosis
  • Increase mineral absorption
  • Decrease pathogenic bacteria in the intestine
  • Reduce atherosclerosis by lowering triglyceride and fatty acid synthesis
  • Modulate insulin and glucagon, thus helping regulate blood sugar
  • Reducing the incidence of colon cancer

The authors of this study suggested that, because of the large number of health-promoting properties of these prebiotics, Inulin-FOS could be added to common foods (especially as FOS is sweet to taste).

Could it be better?

We honestly don’t see how Performance Lab Prebiotic could be improved.

Some prebiotic supplements will provide a more diverse range of prebiotic fiber types. Some supplement manufacturers will argue that a diverse array of fibers is more beneficia for gut health than simply upping your intake of one type of prebiotic fiber.

We think this is completely unsubstantiated.

The studies showing the most significant improvements in gut health, and the benefits that come with it, have used Inulin, FOS, or a combination of the two. Arbitrarily adding other plant extracts or prebiotic fiber types is not going to produce any benefits above and beyond what you get from taking Inulin-FOS.

In our opinion, Performance Lab Prebiotic is a complete gut health supplement.

The manufacturer isn’t palming you off with gimmicks or exotic-sounding but ultimately worthless plant extracts.

Instead, they’ve sourced the best possible prebiotic fiber – one you cannot get from normal food – and given you a generous dose.

It might be the best prebiotic on sale right now, but what about probiotics?

Aren’t the best probiotics just another way to promote gut health?

Yes, probiotics can improve digestive health and bring about all the benefits that come from having a healthier gut microbiome.

However, we think the research is clear on this one – the best way to rebalance a gut and promote long-term, lasting gut health is to consume more prebiotic fiber on a regular basis.

Most people will find it hard to increase their intake of water soluble fiber.

You will find it particularly hard to eat enough prebiotic fiber if you have eaten a diet high in red meat, alcohol, and processed sugar for much of your life. Suddenly eating a lot more fiber will normally cause bloating, indigestion, and gas while your body gets used to processing more fiber.

Prebiotics can help these people rebalance their gut microbiome and get used to consuming more fiber.

Probiotics, by contrast, cannot do that.

The benefits of probiotics are very transient, and they can be very unpredictable. As probiotics just introduce foreign bacteria species (normally 10 or more species), they can potentially make your digestive issues worse. What’s more, most of the species introduced by probiotics will simply die or be passed through the gut if the conditions in the gut are not right.

Prebiotics create a hospitable environment for probiotic bacteria.

In other words, prebiotics fix the cause of your problems, while probiotics provide temporary solutions.


Side effects: is Performance Lab Prebiotic safe?

Prebiotics are, generally speaking, very safe.

Unlike probiotics, they do not introduce anything to the body that is not found in the natural human diet.

Because they aren’t introducing exogenous bacteria strains to the gut, the risks of side effects from prebiotics are minimal.

Performance Lab Prebiotic is even less likely to cause side effects than most prebiotics because the ingredient quality is so high.

That said, some people do experience side effects when they start consuming more prebiotic fiber.

Common side effects from adding more fiber to the diet include:

    I just received my prebiotic, I took 3 capsules per day and it help my sleep a lot, may I know why?

    Bottle is labeled 30-day supply. However, under “How to Take” it , it suggests you take 3 capsules with your first meal, then 3 with your second meal. At 6 per day, this 90-count bottle would only last 15 days. Are these instructions correct? Or…will 3 per day be as effective?

      Hey Patty, thanks for commenting. Good question. You are right; the website does say to take 3 capsules of Performance Lab Prebiotic with breakfast and then another 3 capsules later, which would mean you are taking 2 servings per day, giving you 15 days per bottle. However, we believe that 2g per day is more than enough Inulin-FOS to promote optimal gut health over the long-term if used daily. The whole idea of prebiotics like Performance Lab Prebiotic is that they prevent you from ever experiencing gut health issues in the first place, so a consistent, long-term approach is always optimal. But if you have a serious lack of dietary fiber to address, then 2 servings per day may be necessary.
